Copyright and your great-great-great grandchildren...

A fairly humorous rant on the importance (not) of copyright being preserved ad infinitum...

One of my favorite sayings is a casual comment Fred Brooks once made: (paraphrased) "When you die, whoever has had the most ideas stolen, wins." Working at Kitware has proven to be everything I thought it would be: giving away your work is a great way to have impact, and having impact leads to more work. Copyright, trademarks, and patents are valid in some cases, but they typically aren't the vehicles to riches that most people hope them to be.
