Triangle Biotech Research Symposium 2012

Hosted by the BioPharma Research Council, this symposium brought together over 100 industry and academic researchers involved in genomics, assays, bioinformatics, and pharma.  There were many strong talks that ranged from how to succeed as a biotechnology startup, to a review of regulatory and IP trends, and to a presentation on the many benefits of GPU-based algorithms for genetics research.

One of my favorite talks was by Dr. Amy Liao, President and COO of GENEWIZ: "Global outreach and local access - creative and collaborative partnerships in a global economy."   Part of that talk reviewed two important areas for companies to focus their efforts to weather changes in their fields (e.g., the looming "patent cliff" in pharma): (1)  strategic outsourcing of research and services and (2) establishing a solid technology platform for growth.  Kitware has great potential to help biotech companies succeed in both of those areas.
